From City Hall to the Closing Table: Why Advocacy Matters to Top Producers

When we think of top-producing REALTORS®, we picture fast-paced negotiations, expertly staged listings, and marketing strategies. Behind the scenes, there's a quieter force working just as hard to protect your success: local advocacy.

Every time you sit at a closing table, the policies set in motion at city council meetings, planning commissions, and state legislatures have already shaped the deal. Zoning regulations, permitting processes, and tax policies impact your ability to help clients buy, sell, or build. That's where your Raleigh Regional Association of REALTOR® (RRAR) comes in—as a powerful advocate for your business.

Translating Industry to Government

Top producers know that knowledge is leverage. RRAR serves as our industry's voice in front of decision-makers, translating the complex realities of property transactions into clear insight for lawmakers.

Over 50 RRAR members, many top producers, recently attended the NCR Legislative Meetings. We visited over 15 members representing our community to highlight key legislation including House Bill 765, which will expand housing access by reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers, and Senate Bill 690 on PAREA (Practical Applications of Real Estate Appraisal).

When a city proposes new rental restrictions, permitting changes, or tax adjustments, your RRAR Advocacy Team is on the front line, meeting with officials and ensuring your business is protected. This ensures policies are grounded in economic realities, not political trends.

Why Top Producers Should Care

You don't need to sit on a city commission to benefit from advocacy, but you should know how closely your bottom line is tied to local policy.

Advocacy gives agents a competitive edge. When you can speak confidently to clients about upcoming zoning changes, affordable housing initiatives, or floodplain developments, you become more than a salesperson—you become a trusted advisor. Being involved is not just good politics—it's good business.

How to Get Involved—Without Losing Time

Even one hour a month can keep you a step ahead in a competitive market. We know your schedule is full, but there are easy ways to stay connected:

  • Read advocacy updates
  • Join our Government Policy & Issues Committee or RPAC Committee
  • Sign up for legislative meetings
  • Sign up to be a Federal, State, or Local Political coordinator
  • Reach out to Danielle Plourd at [email protected] for more information

The more engaged our top producers are, the more effective our advocacy becomes. When the best speak up, policymakers listen.

Remember, success at the closing table started in a council chamber, with an RRAR Advocate standing up for your profession.
