Walkin’ in a Technology Wonderland

Technology Fair
showcased unimaginable possibilities
By Heidi Ketler

The Nautilus was piercing the water with its sharp spur, after having accomplished nearly 10,000 leagues in three months and a half, a distance greater than the great circle of the earth. Where were we going now and what was reserved for the future?” – Prof. Pierre Aronnax wonders as Capt. Nemo surfaces his submarine during the extraordinary odyssey of Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The Nautilus was Verne’s dream machine in the mid-19th century before any of its size and abilities existed.

Did you know Verne is credited as the first to conjure up the Internet, with his term “telegraphic,” a worldwide communication network in his novel Paris in the Twentieth Century? (1863) Seems the “Net Generation,” Gen X, Y and Z-ers, have equal imaginations, which have given rise to new Web 2.0 technologies and mobile communications devices in the 21st century.

RRAR staff Heather Powell, Caroline Shipman and Susan Jones welcome guests to the Tech Fair.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all were as imaginative? Some of us would not be so dazed and overwhelmed by this wonderful age of amazing devices and capabilities.

Isn’t technology wonderful!
Well, hope of gaining a greater understanding of the latest technology and beyond was renewed during the Triangle Multiple Listing Service’s seventh annual Technology Fair and Trade Show on Nov. 13. Here are a few highlights from the fair’s sponsors:

Marketlinx is the MLS computer system provider for Triangle MLS members. The company offers a full range of products and support services that streamline the real estate listing, financing and closing processes for increased efficiency and profitability.

The representative from Realist Tax answered questions about the tax-data service provider for TMLS members. The database, which is usually updated weekly, combines assessor data, recording data (sales and mortgages), property owners’ mailing addresses and phone numbers, census tract numbers, and latitude and longitude for each property.

TMLS staff Raina Joyner and Bonnie Eaddy, along with RRAR staff Matthew Nagy, help to make the Tech Fair a success.

The Centralized Showing Service, the appointment center for TMLS members, specializes in quick, courteous and professional scheduling. Since its inception in 1994, it has become the largest company of its kind, with more than 100,000 REALTOR® members in over 40 markets across the United States and scheduling more than 15 million showings per year. In 2007, it scheduled 869,302 showings for TMLS members.

New View Photography Inc. offers a unique and effective perspective of real estate using ground-based aerial photography. Unlike ground-level photography that results in a “flat image,” the elevated view captures more width and depth, showing more of the property and giving a better feel for its dimensions and layout. From streetscapes, to lot-and-development layout, Web site photography, portfolio photography and much more, New View Photography promises attention-getting results.
