Green
homes to be featured on tour
Spring has officially
arrived and it brings with it the annual Green Home Tour on May 3-4. This
free, self-guided tour is organized by the Green Home Builders of the Triangle,
which is a joint project of the Home Builders Association of Durham, Orange
and Chatham Counties and the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake
County.
This year the tour,
sponsored by Stock Building Supply, features more than 40 homes throughout
the Triangle area. Each home is enrolled in the green building certification
program administered by the Triangle HBAs, and each entry is being
built to conform to at least the bronze level of certification..Read

Urban
living offers 'vibrancy' not found in suburbia
by
Maureen B. Aikins
A trend
toward a more urban lifestyle is taking place in Raleigh, just as it is
in other metropolitan areas throughout the country.
Several years ago,
the American Dream usually included a spacious home on a large lot
in the suburbs, and for many, that’s still the case. But for
an ever-growing number, factors like increasing fuel costs, the desire
for a more “green” and healthy lifestyle, and easy access
to jobs, entertainment, open space and shopping are attracting many
home buyers to more urban areas. Read

Raleigh
through the years .... and through their eyes
by
Smedes York and Kristopher Larson
Smedes
York remembers that his "first memories Raleigh go back
to 1945. Our family lived on Maiden Lane across from the North Carolina
State University Bell Tower. World War II was near the end and I remember
my older brother, Jimmy, and a neighbor, played was – I was the
youngest, so I had to be the enemy."
Kristopher
Larson reflects " As a Generation Xer, my experience
of growing up in Raleigh in the 1980s was in many ways shaped by
the lifestyle preferences of the Baby Boomers.
The proscriptive
American Dream refined the concept of housing simply: single-family
houses on quarter-acre lots. Neighborhoods featured a collection of
similarly-sized, similarly-adorned homes, rendering neighborhoods as
a collection of households of similar ways and means."Read

Thank
you gifts
When words are not enough
By Maureen
B. Aitkins
Perhaps Shakespeare
summarized gratefulness best when he said: “I can no other answer
make, but, thanks, and thanks.” If Shakespeare found it difficult
to express thankfulness, is it any wonder the rest of us find it challenging? .Red

Complete
your Code of Ethics requirement
The
National Association of REALTORS® – not the NC Real Estate
Commission – has mandated that all REALTORS® must complete
an approved Code of Ethics class every four years.
The second quadrennial
cycle began January 1, 2005, and ends December 31, 2008. So, failure
to fulfill this obligation by then will result in your termination
from NAR and the loss of all concomitant benefits, including MLS access.Read

'Social
media'- Only for the young?
As REALTORS®,
we may find certain perceptions we have about home buyers are wrong.
For example, if we think only young professionals want to live downtown,
we might miss the opportunity to share the convenience and lifestyle
with other potential buyers.
The same applies
to the new “social” media. If our idea of social media
involves only e-mailing friends and watching teenagers read Facebook
or texting, then it’s time to expand our perception. Read
