Government Affairs Committee (GAC)
About GAC
The Government Affairs Committee was started roughly 12 years ago, with the hiring of the RRAR’s first Political Affairs Director. The Committee has since grown in scope and complexity and is now focused on member education on matters legislative, regulatory and political. The GAC has regular educational committee meetings as well as hosting several forums on highly popular topics, that are open to all members. One of these was the Appraisal Reform Luncheon, see photo held in June 2009.
In addition to serving on the GAC, certain members serve on the Public Policy Subcommittee of the GAC. This group is charged with working with staff to provide research and recommendations on policy development to the association’s Board of Directors. The GAC also has an RPAC subcommittee that works with leadership and staff on the yearly RPAC campaign and fundraising events. The committee has reached out to governmental, non-governmental, trade organizations and business interests to present sessions and make recommendations on such important topics as school construction, transportation improvements, parks and greenways, landlord and tenant issues, sign ordinances and larger land use regulations.
The GAC also oversees the interviewing of candidates for elected office in Wake County. Each year staff and members of the GAC and Board invite candidates to come and share their views on issues of importance to our members and their businesses. It is through this process that we are able to make recommendations for endorsement to our Board and the NCAR RPAC Trustees for financial support when warranted.
If you are interested in learning more about the committee, our policy positions, interviewing process or upcoming meetings, please contact Tara Lightner Robbins at 919-654-5406 or via email at .
